The houses in Grays
Grays is a mix. Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the town centre and the station, 1930s and post-war semis at Little Thurrock and Stifford Clays, and the large 1990s and 2000s estates at Chafford Hundred with their tighter plots and newer construction.
Each needs a different approach. On the terraces it is usually a side-return or rear extension and a loft with a rear dormer; on the semis it is bigger rear extensions and hip-to-gables; on the newer estates it is often a well-planned single-storey rear extension or a garden room that makes the most of a smaller garden.
Planning in Grays
Grays is in Thurrock, so planning and building control are with Thurrock Council rather than Havering. The permitted development rules are the same national ones, but some newer estates had permitted development rights removed when they were built, which we check before quoting.
From Rainham it is a straight run along the A13, so the team is on site at the same time every morning and a first visit is easy to fit in.
A local team, not a national one
Around Grays we also cover Chafford Hundred, South Ockendon, Stifford Clays, Tilbury and the surrounding area. Planning applications go to Thurrock Council, and we handle them as part of the job.
- The same team on your Grays job, start to finish
- Three sit-down consultations before any work begins
- Stage payments across the project, so you pay as the work is done
- Clear written quotes with nothing hidden in them
- Fully insured, and tidy on site
“Highly recommended. Fletcher and his highly skilled team completed a bathroom renovation, was really pleased with the workmanship and finish.”

Building in Grays: common questions
Do you cover Chafford Hundred and the newer estates?
Yes. Some of those estates had permitted development rights removed when they were built, which means even a small extension can need an application to Thurrock Council. We check that at the first visit so the quote reflects it.
Can you extend a Victorian terrace in Grays?
Yes. A side-return extension takes in the narrow strip beside the kitchen and turns it into one full-width room, and a rear dormer gives a terrace a proper extra bedroom. Both are common jobs for us and both are usually possible on a terrace.
Is Grays too far from Rainham for you?
No. It is a short drive along the A13, well within the area we work in day to day, so it makes no difference to start times or how quickly we can come back if something needs a look.
